A segment is a set of rules about what people did, not just which list they joined. It needs Postalion Pro and Postalion 1.6 or newer. Segments live under Postalion → Segments.
The rules
- opened at least one of the last N newsletters
- opened none of the last N newsletters they received
- clicked a link in the last N days / clicked nothing in the last N days
- joined in the last N days
- placed a WooCommerce order in the last N days / is a customer with no order in the last N days
- has the tag … / does not have the tag …
- is on the list …
A segment matches when all of its rules are true, or when any one is, your choice. Only active subscribers are counted; site users are not in segments. Opens and clicks exist only for newsletters sent with statistics on. Orders come from the free plugin's "last order" field, filled by WooCommerce.
Always current
A segment stores the rules, not the people. It is counted when you look at it and again when you send, so someone who opened yesterday is in "Warm readers" today, and someone who unsubscribed is out of every segment at once.
Sending to a segment
In the composer, under Recipients, pick Only a segment and tick one or more. The count updates; the newsletter list shows "Segment: Warm readers". The digest and the new-post notification can go to a segment too: the same choice appears in their cards under Settings (Postalion 1.6.1 or newer). Resending to people who did not open an earlier newsletter does not need a segment: that is built into the free plugin.
Good first segments
- Warm readers: opened at least one of the last 3 newsletters. For the email you care most about.
- Quiet: opened none of the last 5. For a "still want these?" email, or to keep them out of a daily send.
- Customers gone quiet: has the tag Customer, no order in 90 days.
